These wooden ramen spoons are made from big slabs of natural Castanopsis, a plant native to eastern Asia’s subtropics (from Japan to Indonesia). Each slab is air-dried for 30-60 days, depending on the time of year, before being chopped into manageable slabs that are then machined into even thickness boards and let to dry for another 7 days. Each board is then marked with a pencil outline of each spoon on the flat surface, which is subsequently cut into form with a band saw.

After each shape is cut from the board, the spoon begins to take shape and is given to a group of craftsmen who hand sand the spoon until it resembles the spoon seen on this page. The final step is meticulously screening through thousands of spoons to ensure that they match stringent quality requirements. Urushi Lacquer is applied to each spoon at the end of the procedure to give it a smooth and silky finish.
