During the Heian period (794 to 1185), aristocrats and samurai used golden fans to demonstrate their social status. Laws were enacted that restricted the use of fans to specific social classes. Fans were typically made from Japanese Cypress and golden thread, with the number of wood strips on each fan reflecting the owner's rank and status.
