Making the Jujube Wood Noodle Bowl

Jujube Wood Noodle Bowls are handcrafted from natural Jujube wood and can take up to 3 months to create. Starting with selecting the right materials for the bowl, each log is hand-selected to make a particular size and cut down into usable blocks which can be used in a lathe. The process of making these bowls follows a traditional approach that dates back to the Edo period.

After choosing a log it is cut down into 4-inch lengths and put through a lathe for rough turning which hollows out the centre and outer perimeter which brings the bowl into shape. After carving the desired shape wax is put onto the bowls to minimize cracking as the wood is stacked to dry for 60-90 days. Once dry the bowl is turned again to remember the final shape and sanded to remove any imperfections. Each piece is checked over to ensure that there is no cracks or imperfections, in most cases 10-15% is recycled due to not meeting standards. The remaining bowls are then coated with a food-safe finish to bring out the natural colours of the wood.
