Originating during the Edo period (1603-1868), chawanmushi was initially enjoyed as a savory custard by samurais and nobles. Over time, it evolved into a beloved dish cherished by people from all walks of life.
Cultural Significance of Chawanmushi in Japan
The chawanmushi bowl itself holds cultural significance in Japan. Its design reflects the meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail deeply ingrained in Japanese culture. The unique geometric patterns adorning each bowl pay homage to traditional Japanese art and design, adding a touch of sophistication to your dining experience.
Used primarily for serving chawanmushi, these bowls are more than just vessels for food; they are vessels for tradition and culture. Chawanmushi is a delicate dish consisting of a savory egg custard steamed to perfection with various ingredients such as shrimp, mushrooms, and chicken. The lid of the bowl plays a crucial role in the preparation process, trapping steam to ensure the custard cooks evenly and retains its delicate texture and flavor.
Beyond their functionality, chawanmushi bowls hold symbolic significance in Japanese cuisine. Serving chawanmushi in these beautifully crafted bowls is a testament to the reverence for tradition and attention to detail deeply rooted in Japanese culinary culture. Each bowl tells a story of centuries-old craftsmanship passed down through generations, making it not just a dining accessory but a piece of art to be cherished.
In Japanese culture, dining is not just about nourishment but also about aesthetics and mindfulness. The presentation of food is as important as its taste, and chawanmushi bowls embody this philosophy perfectly. From their elegant design to their practical functionality, these bowls elevate the dining experience, transforming a simple meal into a sensory journey through Japanese culinary tradition.
Whether you’re hosting a traditional Japanese dinner or simply seeking to add a touch of elegance to your table, our Chawanmushi Bowl & Lid set of 4 is the perfect choice. Traditional Chawanmushi Recipe
Chawanmushi is a delightful Japanese dish that combines savory egg custard with various ingredients. It’s a delicate dish often enjoyed as an appetizer or part of a traditional Japanese meal. Below is a recipe for making traditional Chawanmushi at home.
Ingredients:
4 shrimp
1 tablespoon sake (for shrimp)
1 chicken thigh
4 shiitake mushrooms
4 slices kamaboko fish cake
Egg Mixture:
3 large eggs
1½ cup water
1 teaspoon dashi powder
1 teaspoon Kikkoman® Aji-Mirin
1 teaspoon Kikkoman® Soy Sauce
To Serve:
Chopped mitsuba (Japanese parsley) or chives
Directions:
Peel and devein shrimp.
Place the shrimp in a small bowl and add sake to remove the unwanted smell.
Cut the chicken into bite-size pieces (cutting diagonally helps the chicken into equal thickness).
Bring water to boil in a small saucepan and blanch the chicken until no longer pink outside (you don’t have to cook it through at this time). Transfer to a plate lined with paper towel.
In the same boiling water, blanch shrimp until it changes color (you don’t have to cook it through). Transfer to the paper towel.
Cut the shiitake mushrooms in halves.
Beat the eggs in a large bowl without creating too many bubbles/air in the mixture.
Combine 1 ½ cup water and dashi powder in a measuring cup and mix well together.
Add dashi and mirin in the egg mixture.
Then add soy sauce and mix well together.
Cover the lid with kitchen towel to prevent the condensation falling onto the chawanmushi.
Place a small and thin kitchen towel on the bottom of the pot. Put 1 inches of water. Close the lid and bring to a boil on low heat.
Meanwhile, fill the chawanmushi cups with ingredients. Start adding chicken in the cups and keep the colorful ingredients such as kamaboko fish cakes and shrimp toward the top.
Divide the egg mixture evenly into Chawanmushi cups.
Carefully but quickly place the chawanmushi cups in the pot. The water should be around the half way up the cups.
Cover the pot, leaving the lid ajar. Increase the heat for 1 minute to bring back the steam, then reduce the heat to the lowest possible. This make sure that inside the steamer is less than 194 ºF (90 ºC). The trick for this dish is to cook slowly on low heat.
Steam for 12-15 minutes, or until liquid doesn’t come out when a skewer is inserted. Carefully remove the chawanmushi cups from the pot (be careful it’s hot).
Add the chopped mitsuba (or chives) on top and cover the cups with a lid. Serve immediately with a small spoon.
Enjoy this delightful traditional Chawanmushi dish with its silky-smooth texture and flavorful ingredients. It makes for a perfect appetizer or addition to any Japanese meal.
