Red Black Soup Spoon

The Japanese Red Black Soup Spoon, also known as the Chinese soup spoon, has a short, thick handle that extends directly from a deep, flat bowl. In Chinese cooking, it’s a common utensil for liquids, especially soups, or loose solid meals. The majority are made of pottery. Larger variants of the Chinese spoon are used as serving spoons or ladles in addition to being used as an eating tool. For storage, many can be piled on top of one another.

Spoons were used in both cooking and eating as early as the Shang dynasty of the 2nd millennium B.C., and were more widespread than chopsticks until the 10th century A.D. Chinese soup spoons, on the other hand, have higher sides and can hold more than western soup spoons. These spoons are widely used throughout Asia.
