Katachiware, Home of Japanese Style Tableware

Welcome to Katachiware, where traditional Japanese tableware and accessories meet elegance and functionality. Our Australian owned and operated, family-run business has been providing high-quality products to individuals, restaurants, and resellers throughout Australia and beyond since 2004. But we are more than just a collection of products – we are a reflection of the essence of Japanese design, or “katachi.”

Our collection includes a wide range of traditional Japanese-style bento boxes, serving trays, chopsticks, and other accessories, all made from materials that have played an important role in Japanese life for centuries, such as wood, bamboo, stone, cloth, metal, and soil. But that’s not all – we also offer a variety of other Japanese-inspired products such as ramen bowls and sets, matcha tea sets and accessories, tea-ware, sushi essentials and more. Our product range expands daily with new products added weekly, so there’s always something new to discover.

Katachi: The Essence of Japanese Design

The term katachi refers to the essence of Japanese design, such as that of the shape, symmetry, and craftsmanship of traditional craft.
The objects in Katachi embody the union of elegance and usefulness that is central to the Japanese aesthetic, and are made of materials that have played an important role in Japanese life for centuries including wood, bamboo, stone, cloth, metal, and soil. With our collection we continually strive to showcase products that embody the katachi essence ranging from exquisite bento boxes that get their inspiration from authentic Japanese Bento Boxes, characteristics, craftsmanship along with a range of accessories that follow the same ideology.

OUR ORIGINS

Our origins lie in a personal hobby of collecting authentic Japanese bento boxes and tableware from Japan. What started as an obsession soon turned into a long-lasting and profitable business. We realized that there was a scarcity of good-quality bento lunch boxes in Australia, so we embarked on a journey to find reliable suppliers. After years of searching and negotiation, we established strong and long-lasting relationships with several suppliers, which laid the foundation for our successful business.

CUSTOMER FEEDBACK

Did you know that Bento Boxes were banned in Japan?

After the World War, the distinction between the wealthy and poor became evident across Japan due to a boom in exports and repeated crop failures. The poor were hungry, yet the wealthy could afford the most expensive items, including aluminium bento boxes. This caused schools to eliminate bento boxes as they were a social issue reflecting the student’s wealth. Bento boxes made from aluminium were affordable to wealthy families and were treated as a status symbol with an assortment of elegantly prepared nutritious foods. Read more about Bento Box History
